A/FX Spirals are a series of kinetic sculptures utilizing HO scale slot cars and track to create paths based on labyrinths and spirals used symbolically by ancient cultures all over the world. The act of facing and moving in a particular direction contains signifigance and meaning according to Native American and other ancient teachings. By combining the mode of transportation of our modern culture, the automobile, with these patterns, a connection and continuity is created. The motion of the slot cars draws our attention to the direction in which they are travelling. The cars in each lane travel in opposite directions creating an incresingly complex pattern that must be experienced over time to be fully apprehended. The track is mounted on a base covered with artificial grass and framed with a rubber strip, adding another degree of modern technology to these ancient motifs.
